Respond to this 250 words. 2 apa citations:
Honestly, this is a hard one in that I can see both sides of the spectrum and how both are crucial in hiring successful teachers. I do believe that it is important that all teachers come to school looking and acting professionally. Teachers are adults and we should know what is appropriate and what is not when it comes to personal appearance, the role teachers have in and out of the classroom, the limitations of what teachers can discuss and do to name a few. I can see that the school, district and state do have requirements for teachers code of conduct in order that there is a sense of professionalism and that they serve as a positive role model to their students.
As a teacher in today’s society, one has not only to watch the way that they conduct themselves in the classroom, but also that of the way they conduct themselves in the community outside. A great example of this is the way the teachers use the internet and their personal social media platforms. A student may be on social media and find their teacher on Facebook for example, and of course they are curious and will want to check the profile out. In our book (McCarthy et al., 2014, p. 285) a student teacher was not granted her teacher certification due to her social media platforms content. It was mentioned that the student teacher had posted inappropriate content on her MySpace page, which was viewed by her students, which led to poor ratings because of only personal content and not that of public matters. Social media a century ago would not have affected the role of teacher because it was not around then. Today social media is growing at an ever increasing rate which makes it difficult to define the parameters of acceptable content. I understand the restrictions of social media platforms for teachers, but on the other hand, we are adults and this should be taught in the college educational courses. What is your opinion on the role that social media has to play concerning teachers?
Example of Teacher Rights
The journal that I found titled “The Rights of the Learner, The Rights of the Teacher” I find fascinating in the list it gives. For this section I will only focus on the role of the teacher and their rights. The way that we are teaching today is changing and so different than what occurred just a few decades ago. The technology that is available for all students and teachers has changed from just the simple textbook reading, the chalkboard writings, and the note taking students took home to study for their exams. The possibilities of the way that teachers can present the material to the students are endless, just as the way that students can learn different material and access material is more commonplace.
It is ok for teachers to get it wrong, and/or not know the answer (Pugliese, 2020, p.33) because this shows our students that we are human, that we are not perfect as they may think we are, and that we are constantly learning from our mistakes. It is the right of the teacher to teach creatively (Pugliese) because each class of students and each student learns differently, and we need to teach so that all students can learn in a comfortable environment and not that of the same monotone style. It is the right of the teacher to hand over the lesson to the students (Pugliese) in that the students feel a sense of independence and freedom of learning the material in their manner and their creativity will spike. These are just a few examples of teachers rights mentioned in the reading, but I believe it is important to take sensible risks in order to better educate the students.
